Areal

Issue Project Room in conjunction with 23five Incorporated presents:

AREAL (2010)

A new work by ISSUE PROJECT ROOM Artist-in-Residence
Richard Garet

This upcoming presentation anticipates the publication of Richard Garet's Areal by 23Five Incorporated in early 2011. It is not only the first time that this composition is being presented but also the starting point for this performance installation. Garet will utilize fog to fill the Issue Project Room's performance area and an overhead projector will display colored light and activate the atmospheric space by changing over time color dynamics. The projector will be directing light to the floor creating a cone of light. The visitors will find themselves inside of the work actively listening and viewing. This piece will emphasize the experiential, the sensorial, and the active-reception of the body and mind.

Areal as a composition, is a work that focuses on surfaces, gestures, differences, and distances among material and its phenomenology. It focuses on activating and amplifying expressive sonic manifestations of electromagnetic waves utilizing radio technology. All sounds used to make this piece emerged from interacting with objects, exciters, and extended techniques to activate sounds within the perimeter of the working table space. The outcome emerged from physical modulations and from establishing relationships that simulate social and spatial interactivity in the form of conversation, where what is voiced out is the result of colliding effects that are vacuumed by electromagnetic receivers from within the atmosphere of the working area.

Richard Garet works interweaving multiple media including moving image, sound, live performances, and photography. He completed his MFA at Bard College, and was awarded a New York State Council on the Arts Grant in 2006. He currently has an artist residency at Issue Project Room, NY, and previously completed a residency at Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture, Scottsdale, Arizona in 2006. Recent exhibitions and performances include: Never Can Say Goodbye at the former Tower Records store; Sonochrome: an exhibition of recent works by Richard Garet, at the Public Trust Gallery, Dallas, Texas; Leervoll, Diapason Gallery; and previous exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA), Barcelona, Spain; Biennial Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, San Juan, Puerto Rico; el Museo del Barrio, NYC; and more. His sound compositions have been published through sound based labels such as And-Oar, Non Visual Objects, Winds Measure Recordings, Unframed Recordings, Con-V, Leerraum, White_Line Editions, and Contour Editions. Additionally Garet currently directs the independent media label Contour Editions publishing works that explore the various possibilities of sound and light. Garet also co-curates with Louky Keijsers Koning, the monthly performance event LMAKseries, which integrates film, video, sound art, and media performance into the gallery's mission at LMAK Projects in the L.E.S, NYC.

Yann Novak - Stillness

SoundFjord are delighted to present the work of Yann Novak, who will inaugurate the exhibition program with his delicately observed and absorbing, autobiographical work. Stillness, is a two-part immersive sound installation with integral visual elements.

Complimentary to the exhibition will be a talk and question and answers session with the artist. We are also happy to announce that Yann will be available for conversation at th...e private view.

Stillness takes its inspiration from the two climates Yann Novak has inhabited: Subtropical in Los Angeles and Oceanic in Seattle. In these works he investigates these climates' almost static meteorological states and their emotional effect on their inhabitants.

Stillness takes form as two sound and video works presented as a large scale projection and 4.1 surround sound creating an immersive experience, each changing so slowly the effect is imperceptible to the audience, thus creating a nearly static state.

To create the sound piece, Novak made recordings of shortwave radio signal tuned to static in each location. Because radio waves are affected by both water vapor in the troposphere and ionization in the upper atmosphere due to the sun, each recording, though similar, contains an unique signature from the atmosphere the waves traveled through.

Similarly, the video elements are made up of numerous photographs, taken always pointed at the horizon, over a span of months in the case of Subtropical and years in Oceanic. These photographs capture a more literal portrait of these climates. All these elements are then digitally altered to create an ambiguous abstraction, leaving enough of the source to guide the experience and define the location, but abstract enough to create an immersive environment perfect for contemplation and personal reflection.

Richard Francis / O.blaat / Ben Owen / Fyxzis @Fotofono

Fotofono is a small studio dedicated to intermedia exploration and electro-acoustic improvisation. Established by artist Gill Arno in 2004 in an old factory building in Brooklyn, NY, it has initially functioned as a rehearsal space for his own performance project mpld, and then as an incubator for several collaborative projects like ea‘s ‘Balancing act with controlled dynamics’ (Winds Measure recordings, 2006), Unframed Recordings’ ’10.e’ series (2006 and on), Ting Ting Jahe‘s ’18 (16)’ (Winds Measure recordings, 2007) among others. It later became also the home and headquarters of experimental label Unframed Recordings.

In 2006 Fotofono opened up for its first ‘open doors’ event, thus becoming part of a spontaneous Brooklyn scene of tiny underground venues (in fact, private homes and studios) – the natural response to a space crisis resulting from the advancing transformation of the neighborhood’s urban/economic fabric. A partial list of such sessions and performances can be seen here, and the plan is to slowly bring out on this blog some documents from those sessions. Subsequently, more events have been organized near and far outside the studio space. Check the postings tagged outside for upcoming documentation of such events.

To be fair, the sound standard at Fotofono is nothing close to pristine. One studio wall sustains an outside wooden stairwell, and the whole building sits right next to the elevated subway. 60 Hz hum from electric lines, various radio interferences and bad computer soundcards are sometimes welcomed as components of a permacultured intermedia merzbau. Also, most of the studio equipment in use has been found around, exchanged, donated, borrowed or forgotten here. Sometimes we like to romanticize this matter-of-fact reality, fancying that we are contributing to an ever-futuristic approach to music and art at large – from our tiny and strangely out of time utopian outpost, somehow forgotten behind the lines.
Gill A., Brooklyn, 2001-2009.

Event Horizon

EVENT HORIZON is an experimental audio/visual work by i8u (audio) and Cédrick Eymenier (visual) developed in the summer of 2009.
The title of the piece was drawn from the physics term “event horizon” which is a bizarre boundary in space time which gives a black hole it’s name. It is the proximity point in which no matter or radiation (ex.light) can escape and thereby affect an outside observer. It is the black holes effects on its surroundings and the light that doesn’t pass the event horizon that gives physicists their awareness that the black hole exists.

This project involves the observation of a cityscape after nightfall. The minimal light observed over the city at night masks the flurry of activity that is obscured by buildings and darkness.

EVENT HORIZON explores the solitary observations of events transmitted via minimal stimuli and the understanding of the existence of incomprehensibly massive amounts of activity that cannot affect the outside observer other than the knowledge that it exists and it is obscured.

In short, it explores the interaction of the subject with the city and the emotions that come with various sensory stimuli and the contemplation of what the darkness obscures.

i8u | Cédrick Eyremier

Start Time: Friday, April 9, 2010, 2:10am
End Time: Saturday, May 15, 2010, 5:10am

Activating The Medium XIII

23five Incorporated, in collaboration with Swissnex and The Lab, present the thirteenth annual Activating The Medium festival, with two nights of performances from local and international sound artists. Each year, 23five curates Activating The Medium around a specific theme that seeks to underscore the connectivity between artists working with various methods and materials. Previously, Activating The Medium has explored sound ecology, audio mimesis, and the relationship between sound and architecture. For the 2010 festival, 23five presents a theme of ice -- the physical, geographic, metaphoric, and mythological attributes to ice as manifested through sound.
